Kindergarten Noon

Edmonton Public Schools provides Kindergarten Noon busing based on available resources and demand for services. Generally, transportation for eligible students is available for AM or PM Kindergarten students.

Kindergarten Noon Busing Eligibility

  • Generally, Kindergarten Noon busing is provided by Edmonton Public Schools in neighbourhoods where there is no local neighbourhood school, but only where the walk distance to the designated school is excessive and where ETS service does not meet standards.
  • Limited Kindergarten Noon busing is provided by Edmonton Public Schools at most sites that Alternative Program busing is available.
  • Kindergarten Noon busing is not offered in non-urban areas of Edmonton.
  • Please refer to the Elementary Attendance Area map for initial eligibility and designated school information.
  • Eligibility for Kindergarten Noon yellow busing includes the following:
    1. Student must be enrolled in the Regular Program and attending their designated school.
    2. Student must live outside the attendance area (walking area) of the neighbourhood in which the designated receiving school is located.
    3. Student must reside inside the transportation service area for the designated school.
    4. Yellow bus must be able to pick-up and drop-off the student within the transportation service area for their designated school.

Kindergarten Noon Route Information

  • Kindergarten Noon busing differs from bus services provided to students attending regular or alternative programs, or for students with special needs.
  • Ride times: Ride times for Kindergarten Noon routes shall minimize the number of students riding more than 60 minutes.
  • Bus stop locations: Half-Day Kindergarten students who are attending their designated school may be offered K-Noon Yellow Bus service, which is designed to be provided at the nearest accessible curb to the requested address.
    • If the requested address is on a roadway which is not considered accessible, the service is designed to be provided at the nearest accessible safe intersection. Edmonton Transit (ETS) bus stops and the far side of intersections are most frequently used stop locations and may be considered "nearest accessible curb".
    • If there is more than one student requiring bus service within 400 meters, service is designed to be provided at the nearest possible intersection.
    • Mid-block stops will only be used as a "nearest accessible curb" stop if all students at a shared stop are not required to cross the roadway.
  • Walk distances: Efforts are made to provide pick-up or drop-off services on a door-to-door basis or at the nearest accessible curb.
  • Roadways:
    • Minimum roadway width of 11 meters is required.
    • Generally residential, collector and arterial roadways are used.
    • Depending on the size of yellow bus being used for a particular Kindergarten Noon route, access into apartment and condominium developments may be limited to the nearest accessible intersection as opposed to the nearest accessible curb.
    • Roadways must provide throughway (for example, cul-de-sacs and dead-end roadways will not be used).
  • Network type:
    • On-demand design
    • Generally, Kindergarten Noon yellow busing is designed to provide door-to-door service to eligible Kindergarten students.
    • In many cases, Kindergarten Noon service cannot be provided to both morning and afternoon Kindergarten classes at the same school.
  • Coverage:
    • Transportation catchment area coverage is provided for either morning Kindergarten or afternoon Kindergarten or both.
    • Alternative programs may not have full coverage due to the size of the transportation area.
  • Bus arrival times:
    • Due to the door-to-door nature of Kindergarten Noon routing, the necessity of a guardian to meet the children, and the frequent changes to routes, schedule adherence challenges are high. Schedule adherence is moderate and should be within 10 minutes of scheduled time.
  • Bus schedule change requests:
    • Deadlines for the submission of change requests and specific dates when approved changes take effect are noted on the Student Transportation Calendar.
    • Due to the routing complexities and the effects of changes on other riders, requests for change are accommodated on a best-effort basis.
